Welcome to Sutton Farms!
Wild Ginger
Asarum canadense
Native Ginger is native to most of the eastern US, is covered from early spring until fall with fuzzy, heart-shaped green leaves and spreads by rhizomes. A. canadensis makes a superb groundcover mat in a woodland setting, especially in moist and poorly drained sites. Enjoy a defrocked priest moment, and peek under its clothes in spring to see the spectacular red flowers with cute tails in early spring!
This deer resistant woodland plant has large, heart-shaped leaves and produces unusual urn-shaped deep burgundy flowers almost at ground level
that are almost always hidden by the leaves. Early pioneers used the fresh or dried roots as a ginger substitute and aboriginal people highly valued the root as a cure for a variety of ailments. Wild Ginger grows
well in average, medium to moist, well-drained soil, in part shade to full shade but prefers constantly moist, acidic soils in heavy shade. Spreads slowly by rhizomes to form an attractive ground cover for shade areas.
