Virginia Bluebell

Mertensia virginica

Virginia Bluebell, also known as Virginia cowslip.

Bluebells are a tolerant plant producing blue, bell-shaped flowers. After blooming the plant dies down by mid-summer, leaving a gap in the garden. The plant is useful for naturalizing. The flower buds are reddish purple before they open to blue flowers. The plants grow in shaded spots and tolerate most soils. A sandy, peaty soil is preferred. Once the plant is established it doesn't like to be disturbed.
