I am a novice new owner of a large ornamental pond, tell me how to get it flowing again. Suggestions?
I purchased a a home with a beautiful pool sized three tiered ornamental pond. All of the liner and underground PVC tubing is in place with several boxes that look as though they housed pumps or other kind of pond accessory need. The decorative stonework looks amazing however it looks as if it needs a good weeding. The entire thing is probably 13-15 feet tall and as wide as a garage. Unfortunately, I know nothing of ponds. Where is a good place to get help with this kind of a pond? I live in cold winter climates and need to know how to winterize as well but I would really enjoy getting it running again this spring.
WEll welcome to backyard ponds— the first thing to determine is if in the boxes you mentioned are there pumps– you will see cables coming from them if there are and if you get freezing weather remove them from those boxes or they will freeze up and be no good come spring— if the depth is more than 36″ and there are fish don’t worry they will survive—the weeding sounds like string algae– in the spring just scoop it up and discard– it will keep growing once you have it but every week just scoop and discard—you may need to get a UV unit to keep the water clear during the summer– around $150– well worth it — any plants in the pond wait till spring to see what grows– don’t like them — garbage –the most common are lilies — nice flowers –don’t last long– fish are always nice cheap gold fish and cheap KOI– no need for expensive ones as they are stupid and will die during early spring thaw– you will see– no turtles or frogs as they tend to dig through the rubber liner–the most important thing to determine is what type of filter was used– in the pond- out of the pond -etc
