Solution for small entryway/patio/grill area?

I am moving to a small condo with a fenced in type entryway that is only about 10×10. I want to do something to “Hide” the fence (tall white plastic), landscape it some and have a nice grill area. Right now it’s just dirt and I love gardens, I’m just not sure how to tie in the garden with the patio since it’s my entryway and essentially my front yard. I’m pretty handy and willing to put work into this project. I guess essentially I’m looking for a nice combination of garden and hardscape ideas. I’m open to any suggestions! I live in zone 6. Since it is just dirt, I think I would put down landscaping cloth to prevent unwanted grass or weeds from coming up. Then decide exactly where you want the grill area. Small garden rocks, river rocks, brick mulch, etc. may make the grill area safer and if you could tie the grill area and the door entrance together it would prevent regular mulch from being tracked into the condo. You could use regular wood or bark mulch around the inside of the fence and any remaining areas where you don’t want the “hard” mulch. Vining plants of your choice could help hide the fence, but could you also hang baskets from the fence? Large potted plants or container gardens could be placed at bottom of fence with hanging baskets at top, could be moved with you or contents changed if needed. Order plant and garden catalogs this winter to see what is available or what you like or what is more suitable depending on sunlight. By doing your “homework” this winter, when the planting season arrives, you will have a plan and be ready to create your garden area when the weather permits. Good luck and it sounds to me like you have an area that will be a lot of fun to work with and make it into your own little Eden. Just use your imagination and go with what you like.
