Glossy Abelia Shrub

Abelia X grandiflora

Flowers are white with a pink flush, up to 1" long, tubular and slightly fragrant. They occur on new growth in terminal panicles. The flower’s sepals are colored dark rose to purplish and persist into early winter. The flowers occur while in fall color, making a very nice contrast.

Glossy abelia grows about 5' tall and slightly wider, however it is not always hardy in central Ohio. Below -5°F twig death may occur, but regrowth occurs readily from the base.

Site in moist, well-drained, slightly acid soil in full sun to even fairly shady areas. Use near broadleaved rhododendrons or in a mass in the shrub border for landscape appeal. As a bonus, butterflies are attracted to this flowering shrub.

This semi-evergreen, twiggy shrub is in the same family as honeysuckle, elder and viburnum.

Sporting an upright spreading habit, it has opposite, simple, very shiny dark green foliage. In late fall through early winter the ½-1½" leaves turn bronze-red. Thin, arching stems are red-purple with older ones developing shredding bark that exposes lighter inner bark

Has moderate water requirements and a moderate tolerance for salt and alkali soils.
