Red Flowering Quince Shrub
Chaenomeles speciosa Rubra
Red Flowering Quince is one of
the first shrubs to bloom in the spring. Produces large clusters of double fiery scarlet-red flowers resembling rose buds in
April-May. Attractive shiny green foliage with reddish tinge. Prefers sun, but will grow in partial shade.
Grow in full sun and average soil. Tolerates both dry and wet conditions. Needs only occasional pruning, which should be done immediately after flowering. Can be easily rejuvenated by cutting all stems to the ground. Has red blooms that open in mid spring before the leaves unfold, followed by yellow fruit. Its thorny, dense growth habit makes it and excellent choice for a barrier hedge. Grows 6-10 in height and width. Zones 5-8.
