Sassafras

Sassafras has exceptional features in all seasons.
Small yellow flowers bloom in early spring. Aromatic
leaves are bright green in summer and yellow to orange to
brilliant red in fall. Dark blue berries on female trees hang
from bright red stems in September. In winter, the tree
offers green twigs, red-brown furrowed bark, plump flower
buds and unique branch architecture.
The brilliant yellow, orange, or red leaves of the Sassafras shrub or tree are 6-15 cm (2.5-6") long and may be unlobed, have a rounded lobe on only one side, or have two lobes. These plants are dioecious (meaning male and female plants), and the female plants bear fleshy black fruits on red stalks. This is one of our most colorful fall trees along fencerows, roadsides, and woodland margins throughout most of eastern North America.
Although not considered a valuable lumber tree, sassafras has been famous since pioneer days for sassafras tea, which is made by boiling the bark of the roots, oil of sassafras, distilled from the roots and bark, is used to perfume soaps and rubbing lotions as well as to flavor medicines. Sassafras flavoring is also used in Louisiana Creole.
LEAVES: Alternate, simple 4"-6" long, smooth, dark green above, much lighter beneath, characteristically aromatic when crushed. Usually three types can be found on a tree: entire, 2-lobed and 3-lobed.
GENERAL: A small to medium-sized tree, sometimes to 40-90' high, with crooked branches; often spreading by root suckers. Its roots, leaves, twigs and fruit have a spicy odor; the oil contained in these parts is used for a "tea," in medicines, perfumes, etc. Wood used chiefly for fuel and fence posts. Great shrub/tree to add ornamental fall beauty to your yard or landscape. Sassafras should be planted more frequently as an ornamental shade
tree. It grows fast, and in autumn its leaves turn to a brilliant saffron.
