Overcup oak (Quercus lyrata), also called swamp post oak, swamp white oak, and water white oak, is quite tolerant of flooding and grows slowly on poorly drained flood plains and swamp lands of the Southeastern United States. It may take 30 years before overcup oak produces acorns. Wildlife use them as food.
Height: 60-80' (18-24 m).
Diameter: 2-3' (0.6-0.9 m).
Leaves: 5-8" (13-20 cm) long, 1 1/2-4" (4-10 cm) wide. Narrowly oblong; deeply divided into 7-11 rounded or short-pointed lobes, the longest near short-pointed tip; pointed base. Dark green and slightly shiny above, gray-green and with soft hairs or nearly hairless beneath; turning yellow, brown, or red in fall.
Bark: light gray; furrowed into scaly or slightly shaggy ridges or plates.
Acorns: 1/2-1" (1.2-2.5 cm) long; nearly round, almost enclosed by large rounded cup of warty gray scales, the upper scales long-pointed; usually stalkless; maturing first year.
Habitat: Wet clay and silty clay soils, mostly on poorly drained flood plains and swamp borders; sometimes in pure stands.
Range: Delaware to nw. Florida, west to e. Texas, and north to s. Illinois; to 500' (152 m), sometimes slightly higher.
Discussion: The Latin species name, meaning "lyre-shaped," refers to the leaves.
