Nuttall Oak

Nuttall oak is a member of the red
oak group. It has a restricted natural range on bottomlands of the Gulf Coastal Plain of
the southern US from Alabama to southern Texas, north in the Mississippi Valley to
Arkansas, southeastern Missouri and western Tennessee.
Height: 60-100' (18-30 m).
Diameter: 1-3' (0.3-0.9 m).
Leaves: 4-8" (10-20 cm) long, 2-5" (5-13 cm) wide. Elliptical; deeply divided into 7 or 5 narrow long-pointed lobes ending in a few bristle-tipped teeth; wide sinuses between lobes. Dull dark green above, paler with tufts of hairs in vein angles along midrib beneath; turning brown in fall and shedding gradually in early winter.
Bark: gray or brown, smooth; becoming black and furrowed into flat, scaly ridges.
Acorns: 3/4-1 1/4" (2-3 cm) long; oblong, usually dark-striped, 1/4-1/2 enclosed by deep thick cup tapering to broad stalklike base; maturing second year.
Habitat Wet, poorly drained, clay soils of flood plains; sometimes in pure stands.
Discussion Not distinguished as a species until 1927, when it was named for Thomas Nuttall (1786-1859), British-American botanist and ornithologist. The foliage resembles Pin Oak; the ranges overlap in Arkansas, but Pin Oak has smaller rounded acorns with a shallow cup.

Shipping and planting times are winter and spring months. Please choose from following months: November thru April. But we will make exceptions with limited warranties due to heat during shipping.
And, any tree shipped during normal green and growth months ...which is May through October is going to arrive with brown, burned leaves. They will recover and go green again, but they are going to look dead on arrival.
