Green Ash Tree
Fraxinus pennsylvanica

This species of tree is considered by many authorities to be merely a variety of the red ash. The red ash is a small to medium size tree 30 to 50 foot in height and 12 to 18 inches in diameter.
The tree is widely distributed near streams and swamps and in importance it is similar to that of white ash but developing wood of somewhat inferior quality and occasionally cultivated as an ornamental. However, there are numerous forms making specific identification a matter of individual judgment. Green ash is commonly observed in more situations. Its ability to develop under the most adverse conditions has resulted in it s wide spread use for planting and shelter belt zone in similar areas. This variety of the species produces excellent timber.
The tree is commonly used ornamentally.
The leaves are opposite and compound 8 to 12 inches long with 7 to 9 leaflets. Green ash may be distinguished from the red ash by its lustrous green, sharply serrate leaflets and smooth twigs.
The bark is thin to gray-brown with narrow fissures separated by interlacing ridges.
