Picea abies

Norway Spruce is one of the fastest growing of all the spruces. As the tree grows older, the side branches become horizontal, turning upward at the tip. Secondary branches hang downward from the main branches, giving the tree a graceful appearance.
One of the best conifers for shelters and windbreaks, as its branches grow densely into one another. For planting a windbreak, these trees should be planted 6 ft. apart. Branches droop gracefully as tree matures, making this a very attractive ornamental.
Characteristics:
* Needles stiff, dark green, flattened or triangular, surrounding branch,usually pointing to the end of the branch, 1/2-4/5".
* Twigs hairless, twigs and branches hanging downward.
* Cones brown, 4-7", fall soon after maturing.
* Bark reddish brown.
* Height: 60-90' at full maturity.
Natural History:
* Habitat: Usually planted as an ornamental tree, occasionally spreading from cultivation to upland areas.
* Introduced from Europe.
